In the end, will it have meant anything?
The exacting nature of our words
unspoken, the affection born of silence
through acts of admiration given freely
with no thought to what one might gain,
or will it, as I fear, mean nothing...
Just what makes one feel that nothing
at all can be achieved, or that anything
and everything must, in fact, lead to gain...
Sweet laurels by serpent tongues, words
of deceit, now accepted far too freely,
are masking the reality of our silence.
More than we know can be found in silence;
in the little things that we do for nothing,
through sacred gifts of love given freely
lending hearts joy greater than anything
gilded tongues offer with sibilant words…
Acts of pure affection offer enlightened gain.
But such a gift is not always ones hope to gain
and many remain blinded, burdening our silence
with tangled webs of complicating words,
words with no true depth of meaning, nothing.
As if speech alone could overcome anything
simply because it seems to be spoken freely.
But are these pleasant words, though freely
spoken...truth, or simple acts in hope of gain?
Are we truly so blind as to accept anything
said as gospel...when nothing exists in the silence?
No reaffirming deeds to prove validity, nothing
save the hollow shroud of enchanting words?
There was a time when words were just words
and hidden meanings not shrouded or so freely
worn, when words without affection meant nothing
and ones affirmations never intended personal gain.
Then, much could be heard in whispered silence
But not any longer...now we cannot hear anything...
In this era few care to give anything freely,
many float words on silver tongues seeking only selfish gain.
So our silence has fled, and we are left with nothing...
